“Shifting Hues” Hand-built Vase

Summer is a time for vibrant colours

—colourful flowers, blue skies, beautiful dresses, and days spent outdoors. To make the colours of flowers stand out, I hand-built a vase from black clay, then glazed the surface with layers of different blues and greens. The colours are very subtle, appearing slightly metallic from certain angles. Sometimes the vase looks blue, sometimes green, and sometimes black.

I’ve found that these subtleties and details are what I now aim for in my ceramic work. Rather than eye-catching colours or bold patterns, I want to captivate with texture and the depth of the glaze. Much like the incenses and teas we sell, it’s the naturalness and intricate details—the taste, the scent—that speak for themselves.
